Winter/Spring 2017 Schedule for Shalom Short Courses
Cost for each course is $20 ($10 for members)

FRONT-Don Smith and Vicky Markham. BACK-Mark Canfield, Don Dowdey, and Susan Pummill.
January 27 – March 3: God as Loving Flow – The Perspective of Richard Rohr and Others Leader: Mark Canfield, PhD. This 6-week course will meet on Friday mornings from 10-11:30 a.m. in Room 1, Pleasant Hill Community Church. As its primary source the course will use the book The Divine Dance: The Trinity and Your Transformation by Richard Rohr (available new on Amazon for $17).

January 30 – March 6: An Introduction to the Blues – History and Appreciation
Leader: Don Dowdey, retired University Library Dean and Composition and Literature instructor. This 6-week course will meet on Monday afternoons from 3-4:30 p.m. in Room 1, Pleasant Hill Community Church. There are no additional books or others expenses – the music, videos and printed lyrics will come from Don’s personal collection

March 10 – April 21:  Non-Belief and Belief – Philosophy of Religion
Leader: Don Smith, BA in History, M.Div. in Theology and Philosophy. This 6-week course will meet on Friday mornings from 10-11:00 a.m. (no class on April 14) in Room 1 at the Pleasant Hill Community Church. As its primary source the course will use Martin Gardner’s The Whys of a Philosophical Scrivener (available on Amazon).

March 20 - May 1, 2017: Talking About Fiction Books
Leader: Susan Pummill, Retired Elementary School Librarian. This 7-week course will meet on Monday afternoons from 3:00 – 4:30 Room 1 at Pleasant Hill Community Church. Course participation will require little outside reading. The class will consider universal tools: literary devices, structures and methods, with a brief overview of schools of literary criticism.  Children’s books from Susan’s personal collection will be used to illustrate these concepts, and the class will read and analyze them in small groups.

April 28 to May 19, 2017: Ancient Spiritual Wisdom-The Enneagram: Growing Spiritually by Knowing Your Personality Type
Leader: Vicky Markham, PhD. This 4-week course will meet on Friday mornings from 10:00 to Noon in Room 1 at Pleasant Hill Community Church. There will be handouts, but no required book. The Enneagram was designed by the early Desert Elders to guide individuals from a reactive personality to the true spiritual Self, to the Essence qualities, of our true Being.

Courses are $20 ($10 per course for those who have a 2017 Shalom membership).
